Genophrenix is focussed on the development of targets and compounds to treat dopamine related disorders, including schizophrenia and aims to provide commercially viable licensing opportunities that will be attractive to the global pharmaceutical industry.
The Company incorporated in 2006 is based on the discovery by Dr Jamal Nasir of a number of specific proteins involved in a key biochemical pathway that is implicated in a range of neuropsychiatric diseases such as schizophrenia.
The genetic basis of schizophrenia is still poorly understood and consequently the understanding of the mode of action of currently prescribed drugs for schizophrenia is far from complete. As a result many of the drugs which are currently used to treat schizophrenia cause unwanted and potentially severe side-effects and lack acceptable efficacy. These limitations often lead to patients discontinuing therapy, which is clearly a very unsatisfactory outcome. It is Genophrenix’s view that a more precise understanding of the causes of schizophrenia are required if new, improved therapeutics are to be developed.
Based in Sheffield, England, Genophrenix is funded and owned by Biofusion plc, the AIM listed university IP commercialisation company.
